Rules

Pot-Limit Omaha

The aim

Win chips by having the best five-card hand at the showdown, or by betting so that everyone else folds.

The deal

Each player gets four cards face down that only they can see. Then come up to four betting rounds: before the flop, after the flop (three shared cards face up), after the turn (a fourth shared card) and after the river (a fifth).

Your best hand: exactly two and three

Your hand is always exactly two of your four cards and exactly three of the five shared cards. That changes some hands:

  • Four hearts on the board and one heart in your hand is not a flush. You need two hearts in your hand.
  • A straight on the board doesn't play by itself: two of the cards must come from your hand.
  • Three of a kind on the board makes a full house only with a pair in your hand.

Betting

On your turn you can fold, check (when there's nothing to call), call, bet or raise. The smallest bet is the big blind, and a raise must be at least as big as the last full bet or raise. You can always go all-in, even for less than that.

Pot-limit means no bet or raise can be bigger than the pot. To raise the most, you first count your call, then raise by the size of the whole pot after that call. The pot counts every chip put in this hand: blinds, antes and the chips of players who have folded. At 10/20, the first raise before the flop can be to at most 70.

You can't go all-in for more than the pot allows. The Pot button sets the exact biggest amount.

Showdown

After the last betting round, the players still in compare hands and the best hand wins the pot. Winning hands are shown; losing hands stay hidden. Folded cards are never shown. Equal hands split the pot.

Tables and buy-ins

Tables have 6 or 9 seats. The blind levels are 10/20, 50/100, both open to everyone. You buy in for 40 to 500 big blinds.

Hand rankings

From best to worst:

  • Straight flush: five cards in order, all of one suit. The best is A-K-Q-J-10.
  • Four of a kind: four cards of the same rank.
  • Full house: three of one rank and two of another.
  • Flush: five cards of one suit, not in order.
  • Straight: five cards in order, in any suits. An ace can be high (A-K-Q-J-10) or low (5-4-3-2-A, the lowest straight), but a straight can't go round the corner (no Q-K-A-2-3).
  • Three of a kind: three cards of the same rank.
  • Two pair: two cards of one rank and two of another.
  • One pair: two cards of the same rank.
  • High card: none of the above.

When two hands are the same kind, the higher cards win, then the remaining cards (kickers) one by one. Suits never rank: hands with the same cards in different suits split the pot.

How the deal, the blinds, all-ins, side pots, the turn clock and sitting out work, at every table, is on How dealing works.
